The first news about Moratalla dates from the 12th century where the place is identified as a shelter for walkers on the road from Córdoba to Seville that ran along the right bank of the Guadalquivir river. However, its time of greatest splendor would be between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th when it acquired its current palatial character and, among other personalities, the monarchs Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII stayed there to enjoy the hunting activities organized by the owners. that would come to hold the title of marquis of Viana.

The palace is surrounded by more than 8 hectares of vegetation and gardens designed by the French engineer Jean Nicolas Forestier (Parque de María Luisa in Seville) based on the pattern of Versailles, with paths and water tracks, a domesticated nature that frames fountains, statues and viewpoints towards the Bembézar river, whose views were enjoyed by the kings of the Belgians, Balduino and Fabiola, staying in this palace during their honeymoon.
